How Much RAM Do I Need? 8GB, 16GB, 32GB or 64GB

For most people 16GB is enough, and for a gaming PC you buy today 32GB is the comfortable size. Here is which amount fits which use, and what each size costs in US shops this week.

Key takeaways

  • Windows 11 installs with 4GB, but that is a floor, not a comfortable amount for daily use.
  • 16GB covers browsing, office work, school and most 1080p gaming.
  • 32GB gives room to game with a browser, Discord or a capture app open, and for photo editing and light video work.
  • 64GB is for heavy video editing, 3D rendering, large datasets and local AI models.
  • The cheapest 32GB DDR5 desktop kit costs $449.99 this week, excluding sales tax.

How much RAM do you need for each use?

The short answer: 16GB for everyday use, 32GB for a gaming PC or creative work, 64GB only for heavy workloads. Newegg's 2026 buying guide uses the same tiers, and they match what most people run into when memory fills up. If you are new to the topic, our guide on what RAM is and how it works explains the basics first.

Microsoft lists 4GB as the minimum to install Windows 11. That is a floor to get the system running, not a comfortable amount for daily use. Microsoft itself sets 16GB as the requirement for its Copilot+ PCs, so new AI branded Windows laptops start at that size.

The table below shows what each size is good for, with the cheapest DDR5 desktop kit we found in US shops this week.

CapacityWho it is forCheapest DDR5 desktop kit
8GBA spare PC for the web, mail and documents$129.99
16GBOffice work, school, streaming video, most games at 1080p$237.00
32GBGaming with other apps open, photo editing, light video, a virtual machine$449.99
64GBSerious video editing, 3D rendering, large datasets, local AI models$735.21

Buy the amount you will need for the next few years, not just for today. Adding a second kit later is cheaper on paper, but two kits that were not tested together do not always run at their rated speed.

How much RAM for gaming?

For a gaming PC you build or buy today, get 32GB. 16GB still runs most games at 1080p, but only when the game has the machine to itself. Once a browser, Discord, a game launcher and maybe a capture app sit next to it, 32GB is the size that keeps things smooth. That is also where most players already are: in Valve's Steam Hardware Survey for September 2026, 32GB is the most common amount of system RAM, at 42.22% of Steam users.

Capacity matters more than speed. Engadget points out that no game requires a particular DDR5 speed, and that any game that runs on DDR5 runs fine on the slowest DDR5 4800 kits. Faster kits such as DDR5 7200 or 8400 add only a little frame rate in processor bound games, at a much higher price. So when the budget is tight, a 32GB kit at a normal speed is a better buy than a 16GB kit with a high speed rating.

On an AMD Ryzen 7000 or 9000 build, DDR5 6000 CL30 is the common pick, and our gaming RAM comparison lists kits by price. If you are still on an older DDR4 platform, the advice on capacity is the same; the DDR5 vs DDR4 comparison explains when a platform change is worth it.

32GB or 64GB: who needs more?

Most people do not need 64GB. It pays off when you edit long 4K video, render 3D scenes, work with large datasets or run AI models on your own PC. In those cases the extra memory saves real time, because the system does not have to move data back to the much slower SSD.

For a gaming PC, 64GB brings nothing you will notice today. It also costs a lot more than 32GB in the current market: the cheapest 64GB DDR5 desktop kit costs $735.21 this week, against $449.99 for 32GB. Our 64GB price page shows every kit in that size.

If you do go to 64GB, buy it as two 32GB modules, not four 16GB modules. Desktop platforms are dual channel, and four modules make it harder to keep the speed up. AMD's own spec for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D shows how big the gap is: DDR5 5600 with two modules, DDR5 3600 with four.

Laptops and Macs

Laptops follow the same tiers: 16GB for everyday use, 32GB for gaming or editing. The difference is that you often cannot add memory later. Many thin laptops have their memory soldered to the board, so the amount you buy is the amount you keep. Check the spec sheet before you order a model with too little RAM.

If your laptop has slots, it takes SO-DIMM modules, the short version of a desktop stick. They do not fit a desktop slot and the other way round. Corsair advises matching the type, capacity and speed of the module that is already installed, and warns that going over the maximum your laptop supports can stop it from booting. Our laptop RAM prices list SO-DIMM kits separately from desktop kits.

On a Mac with Apple silicon, the memory sits inside the chip package. Apple says it cannot be upgraded, so you choose the size when you buy. The current 13 inch MacBook Air with the M5 chip starts at 16GB and can be configured with 24GB or 32GB at purchase. Our Mac RAM guide covers which older Macs still take extra memory.

How to check what you have and what fits

On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open the Task Manager, go to Performance and click Memory. You see how much RAM is installed, how much is in use and how many slots are taken. Leave it open during a normal working or gaming session. If the memory graph sits near the top most of the time, more RAM will help. If it stays well below that, a faster SSD or processor will do more for you than extra memory.

Before you order, find out what your PC accepts. Corsair's upgrade checklist starts with the motherboard model, the CPU, the maximum amount of RAM the combination supports, the memory type and the number of free slots. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable: the notch sits in a different place, so the wrong generation does not go into the slot.

Before you add RAM

Check your motherboard manual for the memory type and the maximum capacity. Replacing all modules with one matched kit is the only way to be sure the sticks work together; adding a second kit to the one you have is cheaper but can stop the memory from running at its rated speed.

Our guide on how to upgrade RAM walks through the installation itself, for desktops and laptops.

What each size costs this week

RAM is expensive in 2026, so the size you pick has a large effect on the bill. The table below shows the cheapest and the median kit in each size from our weekly check of Adorama, Amazon.com, B&H Photo, Best Buy, Corsair.com, Newegg and Walmart, with the lowest price per GB. Prices are excluding sales tax.

Common mistakes

  • Buying for today only. A PC you keep for four or five years will run heavier software at the end than at the start. If you can, buy the next size up now instead of adding a kit later.
  • Mixing kits. Two kits that were not sold together may refuse to run at their rated speed, or at all.
  • Filling four slots for 64GB. Two 32GB modules hold their speed better than four 16GB modules on a dual channel board.
  • Paying for speed instead of size. A 32GB kit at a normal speed beats a fast 16GB kit for gaming with other apps open.
  • Buying a laptop with too little soldered memory. You cannot fix it later, so pick at least 16GB at purchase.
  • Ordering the wrong generation. DDR4 and DDR5 look alike in photos. Check the motherboard first.

Questions
