Why is DDR5 6000 CL30 the default pick for AM5?

On Ryzen 7000 and 9000 processors, 6000 MT/s is about the fastest speed at which the memory controller can still run at the same clock as the memory. Go faster and the controller drops to half the memory clock, which adds delay. That is why buying guides such as Newegg's land on this kit for AM5. For every type and size of memory, start at our RAM prices overview.

It is not an AMD guarantee. AMD lists DDR5 5600 for Ryzen 9000 and DDR5 5200 for Ryzen 7000. A 6000 kit reaches its rated speed through its EXPO profile, and both AMD and Intel mark memory profiles as overclocking, outside spec. Engadget notes that almost every AMD build uses a DDR5 6000 kit anyway.

After you install it

Switch on EXPO (AMD) or XMP (Intel) in the BIOS. Without a profile, a DDR5 6000 kit boots at its JEDEC default, usually 4800 or 5600 MT/s. Corsair lists 4800 MT/s CL40 as the SPD default of its own Vengeance 6000 CL30 kit.

What does CL30 get you?

CL30 means the module waits 30 clock cycles before it answers. True latency in nanoseconds is CL x 2000 divided by the speed in MT/s, a form worked out from Crucial's explanation. For DDR5 6000 CL30 that gives 10 ns. A DDR5 6000 CL36 kit lands at 12 ns, and an entry DDR5 4800 CL40 kit at nearly 17 ns.

Shops often sell these kits as "6000MHz RAM". The correct unit is MT/s: DDR memory moves data twice per clock cycle, so the memory clock itself is 3,000 MHz.

For games the gain is modest. Engadget found no game that needs a specific DDR5 speed, and very fast kits only add a little frame rate when the processor is the limit. Tom's Hardware testing, as Engadget reports it, put a DDR5 6000 CL30 kit ahead of a DDR5 6400 CL32 kit.

Which DDR5 6000 CL30 kit should you buy?

For gaming with a browser and chat open, Newegg points to 32GB, which means two 16GB sticks. That kit starts at $469.99 this week. For video editing, 3D work or local AI models, step up to 64GB as two 32GB sticks, from $833.63. Our 32GB RAM prices page lists 32GB kits at every speed.

Buy two sticks, not four. AMD's spec for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D drops from DDR5 5600 with two modules to DDR5 3600 with four. If you expect to need 64GB later, buy the 64GB kit now.

On Intel Core Ultra 200S, Intel lists DDR5 up to 6400 MT/s and Newegg suggests 6000 to 6400, so this kit works there if it carries an XMP profile. Corsair, for example, sells Vengeance 6000 CL30 kits with both EXPO and XMP; see our Corsair RAM prices.

Is DDR5 5600 enough? For gaming, often yes. The cheapest 32GB DDR5 5600 desktop kit costs $449.99 this week, against $469.99 for 32GB at 6000 CL30. If the gap is large, the slower kit is a fair buy. Every speed side by side: DDR5 RAM prices.

Questions about DDR5 6000 CL30 RAM

How much is DDR5 6000 CL30 RAM right now?

From $139.99 for the cheapest kit in stock, with a median of $647.50 across 85 kits. Prices are excluding sales tax and were last checked on November 2, 2026.

Is DDR5 6000 CL30 worth it over DDR5 5600?

On AMD AM5 it usually is, because 6000 MT/s keeps the memory controller in step with the memory clock. If a 5600 kit costs clearly less this week, it is still a sound buy: Engadget notes that no game needs a particular DDR5 speed.

Why does my DDR5 6000 kit run at 4800 MT/s?

The EXPO or XMP profile is off. Without it the kit boots at its JEDEC default, usually 4800 or 5600 MT/s. Switch the profile on in the BIOS.

Does DDR5 6000 CL30 work with Intel?

Yes, on a DDR5 board. Intel lists DDR5 up to 6400 MT/s for Core Ultra 200S and Newegg recommends 6000 to 6400 there, so pick a kit with an XMP profile.

Is 6000MHz RAM the same as 6000 MT/s?

Yes, shops use both labels for the same kit. DDR memory transfers data twice per clock cycle, so MT/s is the correct unit and the memory clock itself is 3,000 MHz.
