Why Is RAM So Expensive Right Now?
Cloud providers building AI data centres now outbid PC buyers for the same memory chips, and supply cannot grow fast. How that reaches UK shelves, and what a kit costs at Amazon.co.uk, AWD-IT, Box, CCL, Laptops Direct, Overclockers UK and Scan this week.
Key takeaways
- Three chip makers decide what each wafer becomes, and server memory pays them far more than desktop kits.
- TrendForce projects the nine biggest cloud providers will spend about US$957 billion on capex in 2026 and name memory as a reason AI servers cost more.
- DDR4 is being wound down, so the older generation is no longer the cheap fallback.
- Contract price rises have slowed since early 2026, but slower rises are still rises.
- The cheapest 32GB DDR5 desktop kit in our UK data costs £420.97 this week.
Who decides what a kit costs
The price of a memory kit is set long before it reaches a UK shop. Three companies, Samsung, SK hynix and Micron, took 38.5%, 28.8% and 22.4% of global DRAM revenue in the first quarter of 2026, according to TrendForce. They decide what each wafer becomes, and at the moment the best paying answer is memory for servers, not for your PC.
That is the core reason RAM is so expensive. Our RAMageddon explainer follows the whole shortage from the first DDR4 warnings in 2025. This page stays with the mechanics: who is competing for the chips, how a price travels from the factory to the shelf, and whether anything points to cheaper RAM soon.
Cloud budgets that dwarf the PC market
The heaviest buyers of memory today are cloud providers building AI data centres. TrendForce projects that the nine largest, among them Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta, will spend about US$957 billion on capital expenditure in 2026, more than double the year before. It expects that figure to pass US$1.5 trillion in 2027, and it names shortages and rising prices of memory as one reason AI server racks are getting dearer. These buyers also sign multi year supply agreements, TrendForce reports, so part of future output is spoken for before it reaches the open market.
AI hardware is also hungry for wafer space. High bandwidth memory (HBM), the stacked memory on AI accelerators, needs about three times as much wafer space as DDR5, Micron said on its December 2025 earnings call, as reported by Tom's Hardware. On the same call Micron said it could supply only half to two thirds of what its key customers wanted.
The pressure is not limited to HBM. TrendForce reported in June 2026 that servers for AI inference and agentic AI run on standard DDR5 server modules. Those come out of the same production as the DDR5 in a home PC, so a desktop kit now competes with a data centre that has a far larger budget.
From the factory to a UK shelf
Memory is priced in three layers, and each one reacts at its own speed. The table shows who trades at each layer and the most recent figure we can source for it.
| Price layer | Who trades at it | Latest figure |
|---|---|---|
| Contract price | Chip makers and big buyers such as PC makers and cloud providers, usually per quarter | Conventional DRAM up about 93% to 98% quarter on quarter in 1Q26 (TrendForce) |
| Spot price | Traders, module makers and distributors on the open market | Benchmark DDR4 chip at US$46.32 on 6 October 2026 (TrendForce) |
| Retail price | You, at a UK shop | Cheapest 32GB DDR5 desktop kit in our check: £420.97 |
The spot market moves first. TrendForce put its benchmark DDR4 chip at US$46.32 in early October 2026, close to eight times the level of late September 2025, although trading that week was sluggish and largely sideways. Contract prices follow quarter by quarter, and shop prices trail both by weeks to months.
That lag matters when you shop. A rise reported in a press release can take a while to reach a basket, and one retailer still selling older stock can sit well below another for the same kit.
Why DDR5 and DDR4 both got dearer
Usually the older generation gets cheaper once a new one takes over. Not this time. Samsung, SK hynix and Micron all announced in 2025 that they would wind down DDR4 to free lines for DDR5, LPDDR5 and HBM. Server orders for DDR4 then crowded out what was left for PCs, and in July 2025 an 8GB DDR4 PC module cost more than an 8GB DDR5 module, a rare inversion TrendForce flagged that August.
DDR5 is expensive for a different reason: it sits closest to the server boom. Each wafer that goes into server modules, or that HBM takes over, is one fewer for consumer kits. TrendForce warned in September 2026 that PC DRAM supply could decline in 2027 as more capacity moves to servers.
So a DDR4 board is no longer a cheap escape route, and a new DDR5 build carries the full weight of the shortage. Compare both on our DDR5 RAM prices page and the wider RAM prices overview before you decide which platform to buy into.
What it means for UK buyers
The rise reached UK shoppers through finished devices first. The Guardian reported in May 2026 that Sony raised the PS5 price by £90, Microsoft added £170 to £200 to Surface starting prices and Apple raised the MacBook Air starting price by £100. Laptops are exposed because memory is a big part of the bill: for a mainstream notebook with a US$900 suggested price, CPU, DRAM and SSD made up about 68% of the bill of materials in 3Q26, TrendForce estimates. It adds that brands may cut memory capacity to control costs.
We have not found a published UK retail memory index we can verify. The nearest figure is from the eurozone: ComputerBase reported memory prices 345% higher year on year in August 2026, as cited by TechPowerUp. That is second hand and not a UK number.
Our own figures come from Amazon.co.uk, AWD-IT, Box, CCL, Laptops Direct, Overclockers UK and Scan, from the check on 2 November 2026. Prices are including VAT.
| Desktop kit | Lowest price | Lowest per GB | Median per GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16GB DDR5 | £184.99 | £11.56 | £16.66 |
| 32GB DDR5 | £420.97 | £13.16 | £16.56 |
| 32GB DDR4 | £174.99 | £5.47 | £8.91 |
Change in the median DDR5 desktop price per GB over 4 weeks: not measured yet. Over 12 weeks: not measured yet. Change since 13 October 2026: not measured yet. Our UK price tracking is young, so these figures cover our own weeks, not the whole surge. The RAM price chart shows how the weeks add up.
Buy the capacity you will use, not the next size up. With prices this high, a 16GB to 32GB upgrade on a working PC usually costs far less than a new platform, so check what your board takes first.
If you are unsure how much memory you need, our guide on how much RAM you need sets out the sizes by use.
Are RAM prices dropping yet?
Not in the contract market. Rises have slowed, which is not the same as prices going down. TrendForce reported that conventional DRAM contract prices climbed about 93% to 98% quarter on quarter in the first quarter of 2026. For the third quarter it forecast 13% to 18%, as PC and phone makers hit what it called an affordability limit, and for the fourth quarter it expects another 10% to 15%.
The makers disagree about what comes next. Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said on the September 2026 earnings call that demand will exceed supply in 2027 and 2028, with no line of sight to balance, Tom's Hardware reported. Acer CEO Jason Chen takes the other side: he told DigiTimes, as reported by TechSpot, that he expects PC prices to peak in the first half of 2027 and then ease, helped by cheaper Chinese supply.
We do not pick a winner. If shop prices start to turn, the weekly figures above will show it before any forecast does.
What we do not know yet
- How much of the new factory capacity due from 2027 goes to consumer DDR5 rather than HBM and server memory.
- Whether cloud spending keeps growing at the pace TrendForce projects, or slows once AI budgets are tested.
- Whether cheaper supply from smaller makers reaches UK shops in enough volume to matter.
- How quickly a change in contract or spot prices shows up on UK shelves, in either direction.
Questions
Why is RAM so expensive right now?
Memory makers are selling more of their output to cloud providers building AI servers, who pay more and sign multi year deals. Less capacity is left for the DDR5 and DDR4 kits sold in UK shops.
Why is DDR5 RAM so expensive?
DDR5 shares production with server memory and competes for wafers with HBM for AI chips. TrendForce warns that PC DRAM supply could shrink in 2027 as more capacity moves to servers.
Are RAM prices dropping?
Not in the contract market. TrendForce expects conventional DRAM contract prices to rise another 10% to 15% in the fourth quarter of 2026, a slower pace than earlier in the year.
Why did PC and laptop prices go up in the UK?
Memory is a large part of what a device costs to build. The Guardian reported price rises in pounds for the PS5, Surface and MacBook Air in spring 2026.
What does a 32GB DDR5 kit cost in the UK today?
From £420.97 for a desktop kit, with a median of £529.95 in our check on 2 November 2026. Prices are including VAT.
