Is Crucial RAM still a safe buy?
Yes, as long as the kit you want is in stock. On 3 December 2025 Micron said it would exit the Crucial consumer business, which covers sales through retailers, e-tailers and distributors worldwide. Shipments into that channel ran until the end of February 2026, so the Crucial kits in UK shops today come from stock already delivered. When a listing sells out, do not expect it back. Micron also said warranty service and support for Crucial products continue. The company still makes DRAM chips for PC makers and for other module brands; only the Crucial name is leaving the shelves.
Which Crucial kit should you buy?
Check your motherboard first. DDR5 and DDR4 have the key notch in a different place, so neither fits the other's slot, and laptops take the shorter SO-DIMM modules. The table mixes all three, so filter by type and form factor before you compare.
Crucial sells two kinds of desktop DDR5. The standard modules run at JEDEC standard speeds. Crucial Pro Overclocking kits, launched in February 2024, run at 6000 MT/s with CL36 timings once you switch on the XMP 3.0 or EXPO profile in the BIOS; without it they typically run at a lower JEDEC default. Crucial Ballistix, the older gaming DDR4 line, was discontinued in 2022, so any Ballistix kit you find is old stock.
For a new AMD AM5 or Intel Core Ultra build, start with Crucial DDR5 in 32GB. This week that costs from £422.60 (Crucial Pro OC 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5 6000 CL36, black). If you are adding memory to an older DDR4 board, the cheapest Crucial DDR4 desktop kit is £34.95, and our DDR4 page lists the alternatives from other brands.
Crucial's own formula: latency in nanoseconds is CL times 2000, divided by the speed in MT/s. A Crucial Pro DDR5 6000 CL36 kit comes to 12 ns. A DDR5 6000 CL30 kit comes to 10 ns. At a similar price, the lower result is the better buy.
That is why many AM5 builders look past Crucial for DDR5 6000 CL30 kits. The CL30 sweet spot is a community recommendation, not AMD's official spec, and it relies on EXPO. Compare the price per GB against Corsair and Kingston FURY before you order. The gap between the cheapest Crucial offer per shop is 126% this week, so it pays to check more than one retailer.
